NiMet Seconds Experts to WMO

The Permanent Representative (PR) of Nigeria with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and DG/CEO of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) Professor Masur Bako Matazu has seconded three national experts to the WMO Office in the region for North, Central and West Africa from 1 June to 31 May 2024. This is in fulfilment of part of the conditions of the Host Country Agreement between the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the World Meteorological Organization on the Legal Status and the Functioning of the WMO Office in the Region for North, Central and West Africa in Nigeria. The Secondees include Mrs. Sarah Esungi Etta-Odu (Communications), Mr. Umar Maikudi Karaye (Meteorologist), and Mr. Ayuba Mohammed (Hydrologist).
 

Mrs. Sarah Esungi Etta-Odu has gathered over 15 years’ experience as public relations practitioner in both private and public institutions. She has knowledge of French language and conducts translations between French and English documents. Her duties at NiMet included monitoring media opinion, participating in climate related exhibitions and marketing events, promoting and publishing materials such as weather bulletins.

Mr. Ayuba Mohammed has over 20 years work experience that cover surface water monitoring and evaluation and Hydro-meteorological network design and assessment at the Nigerian Hydrological Agency (NIHSA). He is trained and adept in hydrological field measurement, data processing, and hydrological database management using Hydromet tools software. He is trained in the use and operation of the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) for river discharge measurements, He has undergone training in installation, downloading, retrieval, and analysis of hydrometric data using Hydras 3 Software.

Mr. Umar Maikudi Karaye is an Aeronautical Meteorological Forecaster (AMF) with over 16 years working experience in the provision of meteorological information for the safety of flight operations at the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) He has trained as a Quality Management System (QMS) Internal Auditor that ensures continuous monitoring to compliance with and sustenance of the standards of ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 29990:2010 in the provision of meteorological services to the aviation industry and provision of education and training services respectively.

The Secondees are very excited to join the office where their skills and expertise are highly needed to boost the current staff strength, to enhance greater interaction with and support to Members, as part of the WMO reform.
