World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Regional Association I Management Group (RA I MG (Africa) meets to discuss Regional Implementation Plan for the enhancement of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in Africa.

20 - 21 April 2022

The Regional Association I (Africa) Management Group (RA I MG) met from 21-21 April 2022 to review the Work Plans of the Committees for the enhancement of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in Regional Associaiton I (Africa) for 2022–2023 and the adoption of the Regional Implementation Plan, in line with World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Strategic Plan.

The Regional Association I Management Group coordinate the work of the Regional Association and its subsidiary bodies. The meeting discussed matters relating to increasing observational network and data distribution, disaster risk reduction and service delivery in the continent, capacity development and technological transfer as well as the work of the Regional Association I (Africa). In addition, emerging matters or matters requiring the adoption of actions were undertaken, to ensure that priorities of the region are addressed.

The Group was briefed by the chairs/co-chairs of the Committees on their workplans and activities and expected 2022-2023 deliverables, in line with their respective 18th Session of the Regional Association I (RA I-18) resolutions. The Management Group is expected to develop the Work Plan of Regional Association I for the short-term (2022-2023) and the long-term (2024 – 2027) in line with WMO Reform as well as adopt for implementation the workplans of the Committees and Working Groups of the Regional Association.

In his Opening Remark, the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, Prof. Petteri Taalas, appreciated the Government of Ethiopia through the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute (EMI) for the support and the hosting of Regional Office for Africa. He wished the Group fruitful deliberation.

Also speaking, the Director, WMO regional Office for Africa, Dr Amos Makarau stressed the importance of the Group as the advisory body to the Association. He encouraged Members to discuss and come up with idea that will help to develop solutions to perennial challenges of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, (NMHSs).

WMO has six regional associations responsible for the coordination of meteorological, hydrological and related activities within their respective Regions:

  • Region I (Africa)
  • Regional II (Asia)
  • Region III (South America)
  • Region IV (North America, Central America and the Caribbean)
  • Region V (South-West Pacific)
  • Region VI (Europe).
