The Fifth Bureau Meeting

Fifth Session of the African Ministerial Conference on Meteorology (AMCOMET-5), 16-17 March 2021.)

The Fifth Ordinary Session of the African Ministerial Conference on Meteorology (AMCOMET-5) took place virtually on 17 March 2021 from 13h00 East African Time (GMT + 3). It was preceded by the meeting of experts on 16 March 2021.

The Session considered, and adopted the following agenda items

  1. The report of the AMCOMET Bureau recommending, for endorsement of the Revised Integrated African Strategy on Meteorology (Weather and Climate),
  2. Matters arising from the Cairo Declaration with regards to assessing the progress since AMCOMET-4:
  3. Emerging issues since Cairo such as the compliance to the UN Minamata Convention on the banning the use and transportation of mercury. The Convention came into force in December 2020, and
  4. The impact of COVID-19 on the business and operations of NMHSs and how to assist them post-covid.

The decisions of the Session were submitted to AU Specialised Technical Committees and presented to AU Heads of States and Governments for adoption .

AMCOMET Sessions provide a platform for the African meteorological sector and related stakeholders and partners to regularly take stock of progress made in the development and application of meteorology for Africa’s socio-economic development. It also offers an opportunity for African ministers responsible for meteorology to provide the necessary policy and political guidance on matters related to meteorology on the continent
