The fourth Bureau Meeting

The fourth Session of the AMCOMET-4 Bureau Meeting was held at Azalaï Hotel In Abidjan, the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire on 20-21September 2018. It was chaired by His Excellency Mr. Gilberto Correia CARVALHO SILVA, Minister of Agriculture and Environment of Cabo Verde; in the presence of the AUC Commissioner H.E. Josefa Lionel Sacko; WMO Secretary General, Pr Petteri Taalas; The Deputy Secretary General of ECCAS, H.E Chantal Marie Thérèse MFOULA, their Excellencies Mr. Sangare Sekou and Dr. Siga Fatima Jagne respectively Commissioner for Agriculture, Environment and Water & Commissioner for Social Affairs and Gender of the ECOWAS; and S.E. Amadou Kone Ministry of Transportation from Côte d’Ivoire. (Secretariat Report 2017)

During the meeting, Bureau Members and participants reviewed the decisions of the 3rd Session of AMCOMET, which took place in Cabo Verde in 13 -14 February 2015, as well as the conclusions of the 3rd Bureau meeting.

The Bureau requested the AUC, WMO and AMCOMET Secretariat to explore the possibility of affiliating ACMAD as the meteorological (weather and climate) technical arm of the AUC. The request was also put forward to have AGRHYMET become the Regional Climate Center of West African sub-region (ECOWAS).

It was also discussed the urge to update the integrated African Strategy on Meteorology (Weather and Climate Services) which expired in October 2017.

AMCOMET Bureau endorsed the Abidjan Declaration which among others, support the proposal that Africa should have her own satellite. Therefore encourages and support the activities to ensure a smooth transition to Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) which will be launched by EUMETSAT at the end of 2021. The MTG satellites will monitor African weather and climate until beyond 2040. Thanks to improved resolution and new instruments, such as the lightening imager.

AMCOMET Bureau Ministers endorsed the recommendations and decisions proposed by the Expert Segment.
