Tanzania elected to the position of vice chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

Acting Director General of the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) and The Permanent Representative of Tanzania with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Dr. Ladislaus Chang'a, has been elected as the Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)".

Dr. Chang'a has been elected to the IPCC Bureau during the election held on July 26, 2023 at the 59th  Session of IPCC (IPCC-59) at the United Nations Offices in Nairobi, Kenya. Dr. Chang’a in collaboration with the newly elected IPCC Bureau will lead the IPCC through its Seventh Assessment (AR7) cycle, which will run for five to seven years starting from 2023.

Dr. Chang'a is a senior climate scientist with nearly 30 years of climate science experience and expertise. For more than ten (10) years he has made great contribution in defending the interests of Tanzania, Africa and developing countries in research and development on climate change science and its effects, as well as promoting the priorities of Africa and developing countries in IPCC and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Processes.

A total number of eight (8) candidates for the position of Vice-Chairman of the IPCC submitted their candidacy; these are from Tanzania, Australia, Cuba, Eswatini, Germany, Hungary, Russia and South Africa. Only three (3) positions were needed for the position of Vice-Chair of the IPCC. The countries elected in the position of Vice-Chairman after the voting are Tanzania (Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a), Cuba (Ramón Pichs-Madruga) and Hungary (Prof. Diana Ürge-Vorsatz).
