The three-day African Climate Summit (ACS23) in Nairobi, Kenya, which saw the participation of numerous African Heads of State and Ministers, featured a representation from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) by the Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas who in collaboration with AUC and other Partners, launched the African EW4ALL Action Plan and release the 2022 state of Climate for Africa.

The WMO Assistant Secretary-General Dr. Wenjian Zhang represented Prof. Taalas at the closing of the Summit on the 6th of September, 2023. The ASG reiterated WMO's support for the Nairobi Declaration and emphasized the pressing necessity for Africa to adapt to climate change, given the rising occurrences of extreme weather and climate events adversely affecting the continent's socio-economic progress. He also reaffirmed WMO's unwavering commitment to enhancing capacities for generating impactful climate change information services.

Furthermore, Dr. Zhang highlighted the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres' call for the establishment of Early Warning Systems by 2027. In response, WMO and other   Partners, launched the "Africa Early Warning for All Action Plan" during ACS23 on Monday 4 September 2023’ The plan is designed to facilitate implementation and bolster national and regional sustainable socioeconomic development efforts, said Dr. Zhang
