Kenya bank donation eases drought impact
NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – KENYA Commercial Bank has pledged Ksh3 million (over US$29 000) to the Kenya Red Cross Society to easing the burden of over 1 million people hit by drought. The donation is an active response towards the drought appeal from the Red Cross for drought-affected persons. It is also in line with the bank’s strategic investments in improving food security in the country through programmes such as Mifugo ni Mali where the bank promotes value chain improvement for livestock farmers. In Kenya, an estimated 1.25 million people have been affected by drought, especially those who live in the northern Arid and semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) region. The country’s pastoralist communities have seen their milk production drop by at up to 60 percent, with eight counties reporting drought-related livestock deaths. Many more households are expected to experience food gaps during the dry season (January through April).
