NiMet, climate change and Africa’s green fund

The major driving force behind every intervention fund is the existential emergency for which it was deployed. Take away the crisis and the pocket dries up. On the same hand, the liquidity of the fund depends on the visibility of the project and the sustainability of the process of disbursement.

It is on this premise that I posit that Africa must present a common climate front in order to attract the much-needed Green Climate Fund, which has become a matter of global push-and-pull of late. As the developed world—that made the pledge—is not living up to expectations, many observers and analysts blame it on a lack of ambition. But I think it is high time we looked for other strategies to nudge the rich countries towards more climate action. We cannot sit down and do nothing in a situation that seems as if we are now waiting for Godot.
