Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA) is providing on-job training to meteorologists on how to improve and understand the science of climate modeling TMA Director General Dr Agnes Kijazi announced yesterday in Dar es Salaam. Speaking during the opening of a five-day scientific training in regional climate modeling using the ‘Providing Regional Climates for Impact Studies (PRECIS) model’ Dr Kijazi said the training will also serve to develop meteorologists’ capacity to analyse data for climate change impact assessment. “Climate variability and climate change continue to present great challenges to many countries in Africa and the World at large,” she acknowledged. “In addressing these challenges, we require among other things, high resolution climate models to generate scenarios of expected future climate conditions” she said. According to Dr Kijazi, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report of 2014 shows an increase in frequency and magnitude of extreme weather and climate events in the recent 30 years. “These have significantly impacted socio-economic sectors in developing countries,” she said.
