WMO Secretary-General Prof Petteri Taalas in talk with President William Samoei Arap Ruto of Kenya on KMD Transition to Semi-Autonomous Agency

The Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Prof Petteri Taalas, was led in a talk by the Cabinet Secretary of Environment & Climate Change, and Principal Secretary, Eng Festus Ng'eno, and PR of Kenya with WMO, Dr David Gikungu, with the President of Kenya, William Samoei Arap Ruto (PhD), on enhancing the services and transition of the Kenyan Meteorological Administration (KMD) to a semi-autonomous Agency. 

The President assures the Secretary-General of the government's commitment to technical and financial support to KMD and its transition to a semi-autonomous Agency. The delegation also discussed the viability of the African Climate Summit scheduled for September 2023

Prof Taalas pledged WMO's support for the inaugural African Climate Summit that Kenya and the African Union will co-host from 4th-6th September this year in Nairobi. He disclosed that WMO would participate at the summit and showcase Early Warning Services for All, a UN initiative to help countries in the world deal with climate change issues.
